The duration and goals of the consultation will be defined individually.

Psychological Counselling vs. Psychotherapy

What is Psychological Counselling?

Individual counselling usually is a shorter matter, e.g. when important decisions have to be made or as support in a difficult life situation. Clients are not mentally ill according to diagnostic criteria. Psychological counselling may also be offered by psychologists who do not have an additional qualification in psychotherapy.

What is Psychotherapy?

The term "Psychotherapy" summarizes various psychotherapeutic schools and directions. It is a unique process of an empathic encounter and genuine cooperation to help people in need. Strictly speaking, psychotherapy refers to the treatment of officially diagnosed mental disorders, but this cannot always be separated from personal growth and help in challenging times.

There are Psychologists, Psychotherapists, and Psychiatrists. What's the difference?

  • Psychologists hold a university master's degree in psychology. In April 2013 a federal law has been implemented, ensuring that only a person holding a university degree in psychology can actually use this term in a professional environment. Psychologists are bound by statutory confidentiality.
  • Psychotherapists hold a university master's degree in psychology and an additional, federally regulated four year training in psychotherapy during which it is required to work in an institution like a psychiatric hospital or the like (at least 12 months full-time). A psychotherapist has attended regular supervision, therapy and group therapy. This degree is listed in the professional title (e.g., "Eidgenössisch anerkannte Psychotherapeutin"/ "federally accredited Psychotherapist").
  • Psychiatrists are doctors. They hold a university master's degree in medicine and an additional, federally regulated three or four year training in psychotherapy during which it is required to work in an institution like a psychiatric hospital or the like (usually at least three years). A psychiatrist has attended regular supervision, therapy and group therapy. This degree is listed in the professional title (e.g., "Facharzt/Fachärztin für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie FMH"). Psychiatrists are entitled to prescribe medicine.
